snow business

I took Opie for a walk down Fenton yesterday afternoon. AS usual, there were several stretches of sidewalk that had not been cleared, and curb ramps covered with plowed snow that no one feels responsible for clearing. Hopefully, these areas will get cleared and melt today before the big freeze sets-in tomorrow. Otherwise it may be tough going for pedestrians.

Several of these scenes are not of Fenton St. I'm  also sharing photos of Sligo, Philadelphia, and Chicago Aves. that I took on the way to Fenton and back. The County's overall opinion of pedestrians becomes evident during - and especially after - snow storms. Perfectly-plowed streets and parking lots right next to a hundred feet of untouched sidewalk. A homeowner who has done a fine job of clearing his walk, but has ignored the curb ramp six feet away. So, the sidewalk remains just as impassible as it did before he started shoveling - because the snow plows covered the corner in two feet of snow.

There is a reason we require people to clear  their  walks - let's think it through to the end, so that people actually can walk to Downtown Silver Spring on a snow day. So that kids can actually walk to the park to go sledding. To look at Silver Spring intermediate park, you would think the County wants us to drive our kids to the park.  Who knew PARK was a verb here?

There are comments on several photos. While I do want you to click on the first photo and scroll through them, I also want you to see the comments below.

Sligo X Woodbury

850 Sligo Avenue. The sidewalk has been nicely cleared, xcept for the part that coincides with the driveway, which remains untouched. When these snow grooves haden-up, this place will be an ankle-twister. Imagine someone runnng through here to catch the bus...b

The bus stop is just beyond this stretch of dangerous ice.

Gist X Fenton.
What's the idea in clearing the walk to this point, and leaving this ice-wall in place?

The other side was clear.
Whomever did this understand what's going on here -- why we are all doing this.

Someone ran a snowblower through here to clear the way for Montgomery College student. Excellent!

Fenton X Philadelphia - the crosswalk has been nicely cleared.

As Fenton becomes Philadelphia, the friendliness stops. A hundred feet or more of completely ignored sidewalk.

Silver Spring intermediate PaRK

Beautiful!

WOW. So empty.

Very Plow.

Meanwhile, a few feet away...
